We went to the Colosseum on our first semi-full day in Italy (we woke up at 1pm!). Lil' Facts: ~ It's huge! At one time it could hold around 60,000-70,000 people. ~ On the day of its opening, 5000 animals were slaughtered inside the Colosseum. ~ The Colosseum could be flooded for naval battles ~ Before a losing gladiator was killed, the audience could throw a handkerchief in the air to ask the winner to show mercy. ~ Regardless of a woman's wealth, she was forced to sit with the plebs in the top levels of the Colosseum. This was a sign of women's lack of power in society.

Yummm that looks good! Lulu says hi!
ReplyDeleteAnother fun fact- the word 'arena' comes from Hatin 'harena' from 'sand-strewn place of combat' because they would use sand to soak up the blood(also why 'arena' means sand in Spanish)
Love You! keep posting!
this is noodle by the way i just realized it doesn't say my name
ReplyDeleteNOODLE! That's so cool! I heard about the sand soaking up blood, sweat, and tears, but I had no idea the word "arena" in Spanish was connected to a "sand-strewn place of combat".
ReplyDeleteI say Hi to Lulu too!
Hey, What’s Your Consumption Factor?, you have a typo, the correct language that the word comes from is Latin.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good photos. Looking forward to see them.
haha I meant Latin. Also it has possible Etruscan origins.
